This took place at a ceremony held at Albert Hall in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1.5rem; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 15.232px; line-height: 2rem; color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">These seven new citizens represented each state of Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. They hailed from some of Australia\u2019s largest migrant source countries at the time &#8211; Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, Norway, Spain and Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1.5rem; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 15.232px; line-height: 2rem; color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">The Albert Hall ceremony was held after the new status of \u2018Australian citizen\u2019 was created on<br \/>26 January 1949. This was when the\u00a0<em>Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948<\/em>\u00a0came into effect. Before then, there was no legal status as an \u2018Australian citizen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1.5rem; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 15.232px; line-height: 2rem; color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">Jan Jandura Pucek had the honour of becoming the first naturalised Australian citizen during the ceremony. Most were migrants from Italy, Poland, Greece, Germany and Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1.5rem; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 15.232px; line-height: 2rem; color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">Since then, over 6 million people have been granted Australian citizenship by conferral. They come from more than 200 nations across the globe. These citizens contribute to a strong, united and more prosperous Australia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1.5rem; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 15.232px; line-height: 2rem; color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">Today, the\u00a0<em>Australian Citizenship Act 2007<\/em>\u00a0provides for a shared identity through citizenship.
